Monday, August 22, 2011, at 12:21 in the afternoon. It's been a fairly quiet day at the office, when suddenly a number I don't recognize comes up on my phone's caller ID. I let it go to voice mail, but immediately Google the area code; it's from California. My heart starts beating a little quicker - I've got voice mail! Quickly I enter my PIN and listen to… a customer service survey invitation from Verizon. Bastards! You can't do that to a guy who's hoping for a call from Jeopardy!
Thursday, September 29, 2011, at 3:54 in the afternoon. It's been a fairly quiet day at the office, when suddenly a number I don't recognize comes up on my phone's caller ID. This time it's area code 310, and I know that one's Los Angeles. I answer as nonchalantly as I can manage, but this time it's real. It's Corina, and she's calling to invite me to play!
She and I spend about five minutes going over some basic eligibility questions: Do I or any of my friends or family work for Sony? Am I running for public office? Have I ever been a contestant on Jeopardy! in the past? I give all the correct answers, and Corina tells me it's official. I apparently gasped when she said the actual words, which got her laughing.
